Our Partners

On February 2nd, 2018 Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital entered into a partnership to ensure the future of our hospital. Under the agreement, Wake Forest Baptist and Hugh Chatham created a 50-50 joint venture called Alleghany Health, LLC, now the full owner of the hospital. The goal of the joint venture is to sustain fiscal stability and to enhance coordination of patient care and access to clinical services across the region.

Alleghany Health and our partners are working closely to integrate clinical and operational services to further enhance healthcare delivery for our community. In addition to the many advantages that this partnership brings – financial sustainability, increased access to a nationally ranked teaching and research hospital, and a network of physician services from a regional hospital – one of the most important and basic advantages is that our small community in the heart of the Blue Ridge mountains can continue to provide high quality health right here at home without having to drive down the mountain.

Campus Renovation Completed

As part of our partnership agreement, Alleghany Health began work on renovating the current facility and adding a new medical office building to the campus. Odell Associates, Inc., out of Charlotte, NC has been selected to provide architectural services. Odell Associates is an international company that specializes in healthcare projects.

In August 2020, Alleghany Health celebrated the completion of Phase I of a three-phase capital campaign renovation and construction project. Phase I included consolidation of the emergency department and inpatient area. This area includes two trauma rooms, a triage room, a fast-track room, a reception and waiting area, a decontamination room, and three inpatient rooms.

Phase II was completed in March 2021. It includes three new observation rooms, an additional fast-track room, a nourishment room to prepare patient meals, soiled and clean utility rooms, and staff/provider breakrooms.

Phase III, construction of the Medical Office Building (MOB), was completed on December 11, 2021. The MOB consolidated primary and specialty care services, urgent care, physical therapy, pulmonary therapy, and rehabilitation services. The urgent care facility is part of the main hosopital to allow patients to be triaged for tereatment within urgent care and redrirected if needed to the emergency department. Radiology, laboratory, and other ancillary services are in proximity for efficiency and patient convenience.

This new facility is culmination of a three phase Capital Campaign. Overall, this new facility and other renovations are1,500 square feet larger than the original hospital, incorporates contemporary design features to optimize access to care and the overall patient experience, and provides flexible clinical capacity based on lessons learned during the pandemic.

Alleghany Health provides regional emergency care, inpatient treatment, and rapid transfers to tertiary medical centers when needed. The goal is to provide the highest level of health care to the community at the best possible value.
